Interesting Shots & Techniques From Other Music Videos
Artist - The Verve
I really like this video and think that the use of camera work even though its simply is very affective. The big close up of the shoes walking is really effective and is a great start to a video. The quick cuts to POV shots will make our video authentic and i belive the use of shtos that follow him dont only Richard Ashcroft's independence and isolation from society but also conveys an individual self confidence in that he is proud of what he is doing and passionate. This is exactly what we should reflect in ours.
Track: You Give Me Something
Artists : James Morrison
This video has a very community feel where people are brough together to listen to the music on the streets of new york. Using people we know I think this is a good idea. This will increase a variety of camera shots, panning, tracking, POV. James Morrison drops his guitar and is seen lipsyncing to the track while walking along. Our video will suit this well as we plan to use a number of different locations in london.
Track - Chasing Cars
Artist - Snow Patrol
After 1:00 minute there is a clever dissolve edit that looks up at the sky at day and the cameras slowly comes back down and it is night time. This would be a great idea for the very end shot of our video. This will involve staying in London for longer but as it gets dark at around 4:30 it should be fine. I know a great place on Wardour Street next to Soho Square where this could be shot.
Videos that have influenced our ideas
-Samim - Heater : Like the idea of everyone wearing headphones and being united by a song.
-James Morrison - You Give Me Something:US Version : Liked the idea that everyone in the busy city stopped their busy lives to listen to the song...sense of unity again.
-The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphone : Liked the way attitude is used to convey how someone can be conformed by society.
Ideas - Music Video
Location - London - busy streets,
Our first idea was to have lots of different people lipsyncing to the song wearing headphones in order to connote a community based narrative.
Intertextual references : Samim - Heater
Artist shown as street singer - camera tilted up - clearly important, dominant, stand out in the crowd, audiences we recieve this first person mode of address.
Close Up's - convey emotions
Urban noises integrated with track
Different people sing different lines of the song
Shots of different aspects of urban life - shop shots, take aways, train stations, buses
Overcranking used to reinforce authenticity of artists
Final Idea
Location - London
Performance based
Initial shot - streets of london - digetic noises - buses, cars, trains, taxis, talking, mobile phones
Time of day - daytime
Jump shots - cut from one street to another
Overshoulder shots, enables POV shot from someone else, filming in a cafe e.g. starbucks - sitting on sofa - reinfocres that chilled out - positive reflective song
360 degress pans - close up's - convey emotions, focus on lead singer
Cut to other people singing the song- putting headphones on
Special Techniques - pushing camera up/bringing it back down to carry on filming
End of video we will use a dissolve edit with switches from day to night
Ideas ongoing...................................
Technical Analysis- Sandi Thom- Wish I Was A PunkRocker
Total running time: 2 minutes, 39 seconds
Total number of camera shots: 1 camera shot in total, absolutely no cuts
Vocalist (Thom) is given the most camera time, musicians can be spotted in the background through use of medium long camera shots
Medium close-ups and medium long-shots are the majority of camera shots used throughout the music video
The Sandi Thom music video begins with a medium close- up shot of a traditional red letter box associated with English culture which serves to immediately establish the location of the video and nationality of the vocalist. In addition to this, it also familiarises the audience, immediately aligning them with the artist through the concept of Barthes cultural symbolic code.
The camera continues to pan right where we then come in to clear focus of the lead vocalist- the lighting on Thom is lighter than the background which serves to highlight her and is designed so she is visually memorable by the audience. The camera then proceeds to track bacwards on a dolly which serves to allow the audience to view her voyeuristically from the neck upwards so as to commodify her as a genuinely talented artist. By using her face in order to promote her star image instead of her body is evidence of a postmodern artist using a music video as a star vehicle, propelling her in to immediate stardom.
The fact that the camera does not cut once gives the audience a clear sense of time adding a sense of realism to the music video.
As the video draws to a close, the camera zooms out quicker foreshadowing the end of the song. The background shot of the musicians authenticates Thom's music and emphasises and reinforces her talent.

Justine - still missing technical analysis. Second deadline missed...

Technical Analysis
-Total running time: 4 mins 2 secs
-Total of 102 different shots in the video
-81 out of 102 shots are of the band
-59 out of the 81 shots of the band were CUs, MCUs or BCUs. There was one ECU of guitarrist
-The lead singer of the band was given the most time throughout the video compared to the time given to the other members of the band
From doing this technical analysis of Athlete's 'Wires' and looking at other music videos, it is evident that most of the duration of the video is given to the band, and usually more time is given to the lead singer. I also found that there was a focus on the authenticity of the band's performance. This is achieved through repetitive CUs and MCUs of the different band members playing their instruments. There was also one ECU, focusing on the lead singer's hand playing the guitar.
Visually, there are two main locations used throughout this video, outside (a flat desert-like area) and inside (performance hall). When looking at the different shots used, I found that the outside location primarily used MLS and LS shots which was the opposite to the inside location which used MCUs and CUs of the band and individual members. This focused my attention on the band's performance rather than the narrative sections of the video that were based outside, making it clear to me that the star persona was for the badn to be recognised as having talent more than anything else.

Music Video Technical Analysis – Plain White T’s
Plain White T's - Hate (IReally Don't Like You)
Duration - 3 Minutes 19 Seconds
Total Number Of Shot - 113
Performance/Narrative based
1st person mode of address - lead singer - close up's - 'meat' of the video
A number of close up's, medium close up's and medium shot are used to reinforce the authenticity of the band
This is also constructed through the editing technique of overcranking
Urban setting possibly in America - link with indie/rock music
Typical genre characteritics - performance of band, converse shoes, instruments, long hair
Rebellion motif - white t shirt
Intertextual references - The Verve, Massive Attack
Barthes cultural code - walking - traditionally used in urban areas
In a number of shots especially when we see him walking in the streets the camera is tilted up and this conveys him as powerful, dominant and in control.
Enigma present - why does he hate her?.......what has she done wrong?.........what will be the reaction when they meet?
The video is also an example of ambient viewing
Also the lead singers attitude is strongly constructed throhghout the video, he is perpetuated as rude, selfish when he walks inte people, while at the same time appears to be disrespectful the way he doesnt act to events around him.
We are able to understand the content of the video by linking the phone, picture of his former loved one and shots of her to deconstruct his attitude. Everything is blocked out in society and the use of overcranking enables this and it feels that we are put in the eyes of his girlfriend and is singing to us.
The silent surroundings emphasises his star persona
His hard man walk, and attitude reinforces his masculinity
The performance shots in the building represent team ethic, unity and reinforces the ideology that "everyone is safer in numbers".
Exibitionsim - showing to the audience his attitude, how he wants to act and that his issues are the most important.
Planning Review #1 CF
I know that you have discussed a number of ideas already for your production, however this is not documented on your blog. You need to post an entry with the music track linked and some discussion on your initial ideas - use bullet points. Show how your concept has developed from initial response as you have already changed the focus.
Remember - post an entry every time you have a discussion / come to an agreement about something to do with the concept.

Product Analysis 2- The Killers- Read My Mind
-The camera then cute to a medium close-up of the lead singer's face and torso. This enables the audience to familiarise themselves with the band and his clothes are very indie/ rock which mirror the genre of music the band conform to.
-The video uses a first-person mode of address which serves to suggest that the vocalist is telling his story to the audience- immediately aligning the two together. This acts as a star vehicle- commodifying the band consequently.
-The camera cuts to the rest of the band playing their instruments in a casino. This works as an advantage in showing the audience that they play their own instruments and that their talent is genuine.
-Locations are switched through the use of jump-cuts which blur time boundaries.
-The lead vocalist lip-syncs yet their are no links between the lyrics and the visuals, neither with the music and the lyrics.
-It is a performance/ concept-based video which serves to show the band having fun. This appeal to the band's demographi and is key to their success as it is conventional for bands to be shown having fun and being portrayed as best friends as audiences enjoy watching their faveourite stars enjoying themselves- we feel we have stumbled across a personal moment in their lives.
-There are some concept-based visuals which serve to present the bands quirkyness, therefore appealing to a more niche demographic.
-The iconic (Barthes- cultural symbolic code) police uniform featured on a character in the video also serves to establish the band's nationality.
Product Analysis 1- Sandi Thom- I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker
-the camera then pans to a medium close-up shot of the vocalist's face and neck- establishing and prioritising the star of the video. Thom is lip-synching the lyrics, singing the story from a narrative angle. There are iconic references to the lyrics "flowers in my hair" as flowers are appear as if out of nowhere from the sky. In addition to this, overcranking is used to emphasise the surreal effect this has on the audience.
-As the beat quickens up, the technique of overcranking ends and the sequence is returned to normal pace.
-It is a concept/ performance based video. It is unconventional in the sense that there are musicians playing their instruments in random places on the street as they follow the main vocalist, yet the first person mode of address is conventional and serves in commodifying the star as it is her first- often considered signature- song. The audience are now familiar with her as it adds a personal touch, as Thom herself is speaking to us and telling us a story. This also authenticates the fact that they are in fact playing their own instruments, emphasising their genuine talent.
-The red letter box is traditionally part of the English culture. As it is featured at the very beginning of the music video (Barthes- cultural symbolic codes) it immediately establishes the location.
-Her clothes are very punk-esque which the audience relate to the song title and lyrics.
-Thom herself accommodates unconventional beauty. She does not mirror the stereotypical long, blode hair, slim figure, or flawless make-up; rather, she has dark hair, a curvacious figure, and minimal makeup. This gives her symbolic capital in that she is unconformist to stereotypes in the music industry and appeals to a niche demographic- one that is not necessarily one of the most popular in contemporary society.
-The video serves as a star vehicle in promoting and commodifying the new star.
-As the pace continues to quicken, undercranking is used to speed up time. This is to physically show the time and sequence pace literally and also to present the busy, hectic London lifestyle in which the video is set.
-Thom is portrayed clearly as the star in the video as passer by's dance around her and gaze at her almost in awe as she walks by them. The lighting gives her an almost illuminous glow as it is her face we are drawn to from the offset, leaving us with a clear image of her in our minds- essentially promoting her star status.
-Thom's non-verbal language speaks to reflect her personality which appears to be open and positive. She is an example of a post-modern role model to young women. Her unconventional physical aapearance and the content of what she sings about all appeal to a demographic under-represented in today's society.
- There are extreme special effects or evidence to suggest any aspect of the video has been retouched to a large extent which conforms to the music genre Thom is a part of. It is very realist, which is the effect my group and i are aiming to achieve.

- Public walking as if it was any other day - barthes cultural code - used in urban areas - example - James Morrison - 'You Give Me Something' - intertextual reference

- Mise-en-scene - Heathen Street - busy area of london, large amounts of people to show his talent and popularity of music. - Liams clothes - all white - made to stand out as the 'main man'.
- Use of different age demographic e.g. elderly people, young women, middle aged builders aswell as diffferent social classes from business men, to tramps and builders in order to show how varied community
- Intertextual Reference - James Morrison - but 'Little by Little' is not used to show the uniting of community as shown in 'You Give Me Something' but rather it is there to reinforce an ideolgy and represent the quailty of music.
- Ideological Discourse - Everyone has got a talent, noel gallagher is representing street performers, and poor civilians to be valuable assests to the world of music.
- Close Up's of artists face are used throughout the video. His serious plain, non responsive lips represents how he blocks out society and is in his own shell of someine questioning their own being. They also provide the 'meat' of the video and reinforces the authenticity of the video.
- Robert Carlyle used to promote video - recognised actor - also lipsyncing - low camera angle titlted up showing his dominance and his relaxed non verbal language is proven by him leaning up against the wall.
- People stop and look whos palying and singing the music to convey their star persona
- Liam Gallagher - shown as strong, dominat, low camera angle , eyes are firmly on the camera, shown to have a hard attitude and this reinforces his masculinity
- 1st person mode of address - noel gallagher is lipsyncing,
- Certain degree of exibitionism - he seems to be ignoring the people around him and playing especially for audiences on the screen.
- "We the people fight for our existence" - connotes society and how people are restricted by law, aspects of society.
- POV Shot - used to put the audience in the eyes of the artist, we feel closer to him
- Isolation on a doorstep of singer beings us closer to the music and we feel for his so seemed seperation from normal society.
- When people walk past they turn to look at the singer which could be seen as turning to see where the singing came from, thus showing his dominance and also reinforces his talent and authenticity of the character.
- Ambient Viewing - very chilled out song, it isnt a complecated narrative and viewers can casually listen or watch the video if doing other things.
- Not classic realist narrative - realises that performance is more important than narrative.
- Panning Shot - informs area of which artist is playing, also shows his importance and to a degree his talent.
- Perpetuated as innocent and harmless as he is trying to express his emotions and thoughts through playing music.
- Camera tilted down - high camera angle - shows noel and robert as vunrable and innocent as the world and society is too 'big' and 'busy' for them.
- When liam helps robert off the road after falling over reinforces the ideology of 'safety in numbers' and 'friends will always be there'.

Music Video Analysis 1 - The Verve
- Narrative based
- Based on Richard Ashcroft, conformed by society, wanting to change
- Use of Barthes cultural code - walking - traditionally used in urban areas.
- Genre charcteristics - long hair
- Rebellion motif - leather jacket, black t-shirt
- Intertextual References - Massive Attack - Instead of conveying community and uniting spirit, BSS reflects attitude and moods of artist, iconic of rock band and individuals.
- Close Up's of artists face are used throughout the video. His serious plain, non responsive lips represents how he blocks out society and is in his own shell of someine questioning their own being. They also provide the 'meat' of the video and reinforces the authenticity of the video. Close up of characters shoes to represent his 'footsteps through life'.
- Use of different generations e.g. elderly people, young women, middle aged builders aswell as diffferent social classes from business men, to tramps and builders in order to show how varied community.
- Everything around him silent to emphasise his star persona and genre characteristoc of lead singer
- Camera tilted up - represent richard ashcroft as powerful and dominant
- Hard man walk and attitude - reinforces his masculinity
- Exibitionism - Could be stated this is evident as he is always looking at the camera, representing himself and his no nonsense serious attitude.
- There is a sense of 'awaiting voyeurism' as we are anticipating the individuals character to unfold but we are left to ponder on his thoughts. This still delivers a certain degree of 'pleasure in seeing'.
- Video creates an enigma, why is he serious?, non responsive?, and to a extent angry?
- "I can change, I can change", ironic throughout video as he doesnt change his attitude during the song and he is perpetuated as selfish, rude and disrespectful.
- Mise-en-scene - streets of london, e.g camden - when people walk past they turn to look at the singer which could be seen as turning to see where the singing came from, thus showing his dominance and also reinforces his talent and authenticity of the character.
- Example of focused viewing - requires audience attention to understand what he is going through and the ability to deconstruct his non verbal attitude.
- 1st person mode of address - richard ashcroft lipsyncing, the artist is telling a story - "I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down, Have you ever been down?" - refers to him being conformist to society and claiming that he knew no other way to live. - telling his life

Product Analysis 1 - James Morrison
Youtube link for video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWdC-ELzfYE
-Conceptual/performance based
-CUs of the artist's face and guitar are used throughout the video. This is an example of 'meat' being used in the production, and reinforces the authenticity of the video.
-Use of cutural code (Barthes) - walk sign - traditionally used in urban American areas.
-Generic characteristics - performance of the arist with his instrument.
-Music is represented to be a uniting thing - many different ethnicities coming together to listen to the same song in the street. Also represented to be uniting through the fact that everyone stops in the busy city to listen - music is seen to mean something to everyone in a personal way. This is also done through the fact that two girls are standing and arguing in the street but are united when they hear the music and go and listen - solves problems.
-Mise-en-scene - set in busy streets of New York and the artist sings in the street like a busker, reinforcing the authenticity of his talent and performance.
-Camera cuts to different shots in time with the beats of the song. Use of 'beats'.
-Example of ambient consumption - does not need the audience's full attention to be able to understand what is happening throughout.
-Not classic realist narrative - realises that performance is more important than narrative.
-First person mode of address is used - lipsyncing - the artist is the storyteller.
-Use of post production digital effects - dark colour filter used with a disco ball reflection used in empty streets. Suggests that music takes you to another place where the business of life can be forgotten. Also emphasises his performance because a spotlight is used on him whilst he sings into a microphone, although the rest of the screen remains dark.

Planning 1 - Audience consumption
How do audiences consume music channels?
There are two main ways that audiences consume music channels:
Active consumption - Audience commits to actively picking a music channel. This type of consumption is also known as focused consumption. The audience specifically looks for and watched recent videos, favourite artists, specific programmes and music they don't buy. This type of consumption is attributed to music videos that are either narrative or concept based.
Passive consumption - Audience usually scans for soemthing they like rather than being loyal to certain channels. This type of consumption is also known as ambient, where music channels are usually played in the background whilst people are doing something else. Passive consumption also includes communal consumption, where people use music channels in the background at work, with friends or in a group atmosphere.
