Music Video Analysis 1 - The Verve

The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony

- Narrative based

- Based on Richard Ashcroft, conformed by society, wanting to change

- Use of Barthes cultural code - walking - traditionally used in urban areas.

- Genre charcteristics - long hair

- Rebellion motif - leather jacket, black t-shirt

- Intertextual References - Massive Attack - Instead of conveying community and uniting spirit, BSS reflects attitude and moods of artist, iconic of rock band and individuals.

- Close Up's of artists face are used throughout the video. His serious plain, non responsive lips represents how he blocks out society and is in his own shell of someine questioning their own being. They also provide the 'meat' of the video and reinforces the authenticity of the video. Close up of characters shoes to represent his 'footsteps through life'.

- Use of different generations e.g. elderly people, young women, middle aged builders aswell as diffferent social classes from business men, to tramps and builders in order to show how varied community.

- Everything around him silent to emphasise his star persona and genre characteristoc of lead singer

- Camera tilted up - represent richard ashcroft as powerful and dominant

- Hard man walk and attitude - reinforces his masculinity

- Exibitionism - Could be stated this is evident as he is always looking at the camera, representing himself and his no nonsense serious attitude.

- There is a sense of 'awaiting voyeurism' as we are anticipating the individuals character to unfold but we are left to ponder on his thoughts. This still delivers a certain degree of 'pleasure in seeing'.

- Video creates an enigma, why is he serious?, non responsive?, and to a extent angry?

- "I can change, I can change", ironic throughout video as he doesnt change his attitude during the song and he is perpetuated as selfish, rude and disrespectful.

- Mise-en-scene - streets of london, e.g camden - when people walk past they turn to look at the singer which could be seen as turning to see where the singing came from, thus showing his dominance and also reinforces his talent and authenticity of the character.

- Example of focused viewing - requires audience attention to understand what he is going through and the ability to deconstruct his non verbal attitude.

- 1st person mode of address - richard ashcroft lipsyncing, the artist is telling a story - "I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down, Have you ever been down?" - refers to him being conformist to society and claiming that he knew no other way to live. - telling his life

- Overcranking - view of people coming towards him

- Over shouldershot - sense of following him - represents life catching up with him and society right behind.

- Pov Shot - e.g. when women is shouting at him - puts the audience in the eye of richard ashcroft, we feel closer to him

- Shot of all the band walking at the end represents unity and team ethic - 'safety in numbers' - low camer angle - makes band look powerful, important and dominant.

Well done Andy - this is a very strong product analysis, focused on your concept.

Why do you think he is shown in what is almost a 'negative' light?
